I work at the Riviera and wanted to correct some misinformation. The promotion does not exclude video poker. You can still play video poker at $1 or less. This has been the intent since the inception of the offer, however in the first few days you could play higher limit VP due to an oversight in the fine print.

The only changes that have been made are as follows:

+ Some non-VP games have been removed from the promotion. In a couple cases it has been due to limiting our exposure but in most cases it's because we have many lease/participation games on the floor in which we pay 20% of win to the manufacturer. If you lost $1000 in free slot play on these machines we'd still owe Bally or IGT $200. As we upgrade our slot system we should have more options on how to control this.

+ When we started, anyone inactive for 24 months or longer could reactivate using the Grand Guarantee. Now only reactivations from outside of Clark Country are eligible for the Grand Guarantee.

The purpose of the Grand Guarantee is to create new signups, create return visits, get people reintroduced to the property and create some buzz around the Riviera. Thus far, it's definitely working.

Interesting. I appreciate you taking the time to explain the reasoning behind the changes, Noah, but whatever the reason, the fact is the higher denomination VP games that many of us would like to play, giving the best return have now been removed from the promotion, making it less attractive to us.

I would like to hear the reasoning behind why Clark county residents who have been inactive for 24 months are not eligible while non clark county residents inactive for the same period are eligible. If the purpose is to create new sign up and reintroduce players to the property, why would you disqualify a large segment, like the local population. A new customer is a new customer, no? I would think you would want these return type customers. Vegas is full of retirees and even working folks that their entertainment is gambling and they have a budget for just that purpose. You need only look at the success of the outlying casino's that cater to the local population to understand this.

I'm from outside Clark County, and have not been an active member at Riviera for over 24 months (I think), so I look forward to taking advantage of a small piece of the promotion.

I'm not sure, but I bet there are people certainly at WoV Con who would take the rest of that "action."

You're guaranteed a return on $1,000, so you might as well maximize.

If anybody is interested in the rest of the action, PM me. I'm more than happy to give it up.

I didn't figure anybody on here would trust a stranger, but I'm more than happy to work out an arrangement. I DO plan on coming back to Vegas in August with some friends, so we could set up a time then.

I'd take the remainder. Not sure if I qualify myself. I think I played 21 months ago, so that might be unfortunate.

I have played at Riviera but not in the past 24 months. I have never had one of their cards. But the promo doesn't mean anything to me, since I don't play the machines. I don't think this promo has anything to do with table games, right?

I would like to hear the reasoning behind why Clark county residents . . . are not eligible

Oh, this sure sounds familiar. Back in the late sixties and early seventies everyone in Vegas encountered ads for various specials all emblazoned Out of Town residents only or Out of State residents only or Out of State ID required. Every coupon, every advertisement, every thing required out of state IDs. The famed Las Vegas sign was emblazoned "viewable with an out of state ID only" ... well, .... perhaps I exaggerate a wee bit there.

Of course there were gripes and some ads about "we provide out of state documentation" but in general this "Tourists Only" and "No Locals" has been common in the past.

I think it may be that any sort of "bargain" or "sale price" is too convenient for locals who descend solely for the bargain but do not become regular and loyal customers. Look at that downtown sports bar that was ordered to increase its VP Payout from one grand to five grand on its fifteen machines without increasing its coin in requirements. Every advantage gambler in town was flocking to the place and meeting old friends there, some were playing in teams even though many jackpots were won by the lunchtime crowd that were hitting jackpots before they finished their first drink. It seems that if its a really good bargain, locals will descend in hordes and then leave.

Simple way around this, give them a fake address and show your passport as ID. Say you lost your license because of DUI. A passport doesn't show your address.

I have encountered a few player's clubs that did not want to accept a passport for that very reason -- they want to see something that's official and has your address on it. I have generally been able to get them to accept a passport when I attach to it my business card with the address and other contact info. I suppose you could just present the passport along with a fake business card.

I've never had a passport refused, it's federal ID after all. However like you said you could just give them a fake business card also.

I think their goals/concerns in signing you up are (1) get you on a mailing/tracking list and (2) make sure you are not scamming them somehow. Using an ID with no address, even if it is very official, doesn't achieve goal #1; using a print-it-yourself business card might make them wonder about #2.

Sure its possible to by pass this "No Locals" but its an extra hoop. I'm sure there might be out of towners who on a Wednesday decide to try the Locals Only Dinner Buffet at LVH, if it is still in existence.

I was just trying to point out that everyone in Vegas has often faced the issue of how to make things attractive to new customers but not too attractive to local vultures who already live in Las Vegas and will disappear after the "special".

As I understand it, casinos and hotels in Vegas will accept a passport as ID. However, if they have different pricing or rules depending on where you live they will not accept the passport as proof of location if it works to your advantage.

I hope to as Bob Nesesarian on my show on Thursday about obtaining an out of state ID.

I'm pretty sure that the Trop mails out a voucher for their loss rebate. Presumably, that's to thwart the efforts of players giving fake addresses.

I did the Trop loss rebate recently. You get half your loss rebate on the day of play, 1/4 on day 2 and 1/4 on day 3. No mailer involved.

Note to Noah if he is still reading - when I first read about the Riv promo I was intending to play it. After all the restrictions on machines available, I didn't bother with it. I did new player signups at Trop and Cosmo. I played at $10 VP. If Riv's intent is to encourage only low rollers to play, they've succeeded.

That bar originally started its Royal Flush Payout $12K and then slowly decreased it. There was no publicity at all, so the original jackpots were all won by family and friends.

But that wasn't a promotion. They were ordered to do that by the NGC for failing to pay off a progressive before the Lady Luck closed.

Sorry for the late replies. We placed stickers on ineligible machine and do our best to keep them refreshed. However, an official list is kept in the redemption center (Cage+Box Office+Players Club). If you wish to invest $1000 in a machine to take part in this promotion, I suggest you consult the Players Club or a slot attendant.

The whole point of the Grand Guarantee is to boost the database and add more players to our mailing lists - not to make a one time profit off the players coming into play. I don't think there's any way a casino could profitably cater to the community of expert VP players, which is why we limited the higher denoms. There is some advantage to the player in getting coin-in matched dollar for dollar in free slot play, but if you want to do that you'll have to invest the time and effort in playing the lower denoms.

If I had to play this NOW I would play $1 Double Double Bonus at 98.98% payback and hope for a bunch of bonus quads or a royal. I would set a win goal at about $1500-$2000 but would try to press it up beyond that. Not sure if they have any other high volatile VP games, but this seems like a fine option.

I want to thank Noah because he indirectly helped turn a poor experience into a fantastic one.

I arrived on Friday after flying across the country just for this promo. I had the itch to gamble and this helped me decide where to go play.

When I picked up my players card, I asked if I was eligible to play the Riviera Grand Guarantee. I was told in no uncertain terms that I was INELIGIBLE, despite the fact that I am not a Clark County Resident, since I had a very old card in the system. The written rules and updated rules made no mention of reactivations outside of clark county. A while later I got back in line and asked a completely separate cage/players club representative. Same answer. I asked who I could double check or escalate this with and they said nobody.

I was dumbfounded and assumed that the Riviera employee on the forum had given incorrect information just 3 days earlier. I wandered around wondering how I'd ever live this wasted trip up. I made one stop an hour later to the associates working in the high limit/credit services area. She had a host hep me, who went way above and beyond. After checking with the cage and supervisors there, it turns out that the promo instructions come straight from Noah's desk, and needed to email that to the cage in order for them to honor that part of the promo.

After playing some $1 VP, I looked for some slots and found three without the ineligible sticker in the high limit area. All notices say it's up to the player to be certain, so I asked an employee what are the odds that someone peeled off the stickers. They had a manager out there within 5 minues, with the official exclusion list, who assured me that I was ok playing any of those three machines. The manager welcomed my inquiry and acted happy to assist.

For the trip, this roller coaster afternoon ended well-- luck was on my side and I left with a win and did not use the loss rebate.

Great. It sounds like the RIV does want to give everyone
a fair (more than fair !) chance with this promo, and I for
one would be much more likely to make my way up the
strip and play there in the future.

I'm glad things went well for you. Its a burden when the text of an offer is ambiguous or poorly thought out in advance. Its sometimes also a burden when its the whims of the various employees encountered in different departments. I'm not surprised that anyone in the High Roller room was more helpful than the boothlings. Its unfortunate the casinos seem to do things in this manner all the time. Tends to defeat the purpose of the specials that are advertised.

>For the trip, this roller coaster afternoon ended well-- luck was on my side and I left with a win and did not use the loss rebate.
Still, the promo worked for you (as did this site). The initial decision you had to make was 'which casino' and the Promo aided greatly in that one. It drew you in and it even drew you into the High Roller room. That is great for the casino and that is what they want the promo to do: Bring them in the door.

Sorry you had some hoops and hurdles but its good that you wound up on the plus side.

1. Does anyone know if this $1k slot promo is still running?

2. Did they limit the eligible slot machines even further?

3. Can anyone tell me from purely an EV maximizing standpoint, what stop-win limit should I set? For instance, should I try to win $500 while risking to lose $1k? Or should I try to win $1k while risking to lose $1k?

1. The promo is still running as of last weekend.

2. There are two slot machines in the high limit room still eligible so I don't think they've limited more machines. (The Palms has more eligible machines to play but their rebate is done in 3 installments instead of 2.)

3. The answer to this is somewhere in this thread. I think it was to try to win 1k.

I reread the thread and since they've lowered the max denomination slots that are still eligible, Wizard feels a $500 stop-win limit is the optimal amount. The $1k goal seems to apply back when you could play on the $200 slots.

I am curious as to what the Wizard has to say about this promo, and optimal play, now with more restrictions. Last I saw, there might be one slot on the floor with a high denomination play ($1.00 per line, up to 10X, with 15 lines = $150.00 per play). Would he still think it would be worth a $500.00 win-loss limit.

Their website is still listing their Grand Guarantee ... so if you happen to go there .. ask about it anyway.

ON-EDIT:
A quick review of other gambling oriented sites and the Twitter Stream has failed to reveal any indication that the offer has been cancelled OR that gamblers in general believe that the offer has been cancelled. The casino does of course reserve the right to cancel and to do so without notice, but so far there are no indications that the offer has been recently revoked.
So the unidentified "someone" may have given the incorrect information which is why when dealing with a casino email seems to work better than telephone calls, at least in my experience.

ON FURTHER EDIT:
The most recent official statement by the Riviera is that the Grand Guarantee is still in effect. This was made through their Social Media Coordinator onto their Twitter Stream and has NOT been revoked or modified in any way and there are absolutely NO indications that it has been superseded in any manner.

I heard about this promo early on and living in Vegas was lucky enough to have jumped on it immediately with a pretty nice return. The promo received a great deal of 'talk' on many blackjack, gambling and Vegas websites and I think Riviera took a much bigger 'hit' than they anticipated as they immediately began changing key aspects of the promotion, so I am not surprised if has ended or ends in the near future. It had a longer run than I though it would and I suspect someone in the promo department took some severe heat along the way. Another benefit of this promotion is that it seemed to inspires several similar, although slightly more guarded promotions in the $500 - $1000 range from other properties.

The Cosmo rebates $100 immediately. The Trop is $200 but you have to go back the following days by a certain time to get the rebate. Hooters is the same as the Trop. Hard Rock's is over. The Westin is still doing their $50 immediate rebate. Canneries have a $100 rebate at each property. Primm, Buffalo Bills and Whiskey Pete's are doing 20x points up to 1,000 points ($50) for new members.

Just received a generous offer from the Riviera: 4 Nights, $400 free slot play ($100 per day) and 2 tickets to a show. The small print says "Your offer may be redeemed multiple times during the valid dates with a five day break between stays." I've never noticed this on other offers I've received. The valid dates span two months. Does that mean I can use this offer like 6 times? Thanks, Noah!

That is generous. Yeah, why not go six times?
