I'll be out in the LA area next week. I'll be spending some significant time playing poker at the Hustler, the Bike, and Commerce. I've never played out there and am looking for advice. Atmosphere, normal level of agression, speed of game, anything else.

I'll strictly be playing cash games. I normally play anything from $1/$2 NLHE to $2/$5 NLHE and occasionally some small stakes PLO. I've played quite a bit in Vegas, the midwest, and Florida casino's so I'm really looking for anything that may be different at these locations.

For me, the scale was the biggest adjustment factor. 100+ poker tables in one room is a fantastic site. Beyond that, the games are faster and tighter than in most other places, and with stronger competition. It's not like Vegas or even the midwest where poker is one of many available options, or where poker is a novel break from slots or table games. Poker is what there is.

yOU ARE RIGH

people dont generally fly into los angeles to gamble like they do in vegas. So there arent alot of "fish",

Alot of regulars and much more experience

Its kind of like reno vs tahoe. Reno have a bnch of experienced regulars and tahoe gets the tourists who saw poker on tv and would like to try it,

It's been a few years since I've played there, but I remember the rake being absolutely horrible. I'm a limit player, but I remember thinking the 9/18 (8/16 now?) was probably unbeatable. As for game difficulty vs Vegas, at the middle limits the game's weren't any harder, and the availability was better. The sheer number of people and money in the LA area is worth more than the tourist traffic imo.

edit: I had Commerce in mind while writing this. It's the largest room.

Let me give you a rundown on what to expect:

Commerce: biggest poker casino in the world, bigger than anything you'll find in Vegas, and at the higher limit tables you will find some very good players with no fear of losing. There is a lot of money at the Commerce, and be prepared to be facing some very tough players. The atmosphere, however, sucks. It's a dirty casino, the food is bad, the restrooms are disgusting, and there is a lot of scum... and I don't mean dirt.

Bicycle Casino: very nice and close to some of the better places in Vegas if you play in the high limit section (which starts with a $100 buyin). Free food for seated layers in the high limit section (again $100 buy in). Food is very good. Much smaller than the Commerce so fewer games to choose from. You will not find the real high limit games that you find at the Commerce.

Hustler: also known for very good food, and like the Commerce a lot of shrewd and good players at higher limit games. Also the prettiest of the SoCal casinos, very elegant, but don't be fooled it's still a Los Angeles casino.

When you're in the area you might also try Pechanga, the Indian casino about 2 hours away, for another casino with lots of tables, more lower level and unskilled players.

If you really want to go after loose money go to Hollywood Park Casino.
