I saw this happen twice a few months apart, I saw who I believe was the same guy place his bet on the bottom line of the pass line, so half was on the pass line and half was where you would place your odds. Does anyone know if there is some kind of meaning for this? Or does this just sound like it's his way of making a pass line bet?

Placing the bet as you described makes the same bet as a Place bet on the point number.

People do this sometimes if they missed the come out roll, but want to bet on the point number.

Hello Jsu93. That bet is a Place bet on the Passline point. Many players prefer to Place that number, straddling the outermost layout line, rather than to make a Put bet on that number within the Passline space. All Place bets can be removed instantly, whereas Put bets become fixed by contract after one toss.

Thanks. I wasn't paying attention to when he made it or what it won or anything like that, so that was really all the information I had. Do you know if there is a specific name for this?

Thanks for the help. I'd always just throw out a come bet if I entered during a point. I may have to try this now.

It's called "placing the point on the line".

Just wanted to say that this is a quick way to see if someone is a rookie. Rookies will "put" the point, making a line bet with odds, whereas placing the point is better in every way (unless you're at a non-345 table).

If the point is 4 or 10, it's better for you to buy the point (most of the time) if the bet is over $20. Even if you have to pay the vig to make the bet.
Its - Possessive; It's - "It is" / "It has"; There - Location; Their - Possessive; They're - "They are"

Lots of rookies in the world. Casinos love them.

I see it at casinos with low odds allowances, e.g., the California. Players on the pass line take the max double odds, then also place the point to increase their action beyond the allowed odds limit.

Yes Calder, that is exactly the correct strategy after one has maximized the Odds bet on the Line point.

It is well to physically separate the Place bet from one's Pass bet so as to clarify the distinction for the dealer.

I have never heard of this. I did not know that players could make their own Place bet on the line instead of having the dealer position the Place bet on the box number. Obviously, this could be done only for the established point.

Whereas, a Put bet is making the line bet in the regular position after a point has been established, which forfeits the opportunity to have won on the Come Out roll.

That is one of the primary benefits of this site.

I had a somewhat similar experience myself a while back. The members here were very helpful in making me understand what happened.
