I understand that there is an edge when splitting for the back player
https://wizardofodds.com/games/blackjack/appendix/19/
from the link there is some kind of hybrid splitting strategy according to the ratio of the back to the front bet.
however there seems no followup. Does someone know it?

It'd be fairly complex as you'd have to figure out the ratio with each hand that isn't a BS split but would be with an infinitely small front bet and an infinitely large big one. However, there is something to remember about that last ultimate scenario: You'd split anytime a starting total with a single card from the pair has better EV than starting with the two together*. What this does is makes splits against unfavorable dealer upcards more profitable since the back player can choose to play only one of the hands instead of being forced to double the big bet.

*Those hands being a pair of 4's (except when you'd split under BS to take advantage of DAS potential), 5's, 9's against a dealer 7, and 10's.

Are back bets a normal thing?

They seem to be not allowed out here in the hinterlands...
May the cards fall in your favor.

So far I've only seen ploppies do it and they do it very inconsistently. I've never tried it as to not annoy the other player.
