Hi all, I was comparing the basic strategy advice on Standard Macau Rules where it shows taking an early surrender with 14 and pair of 8s against a dealer 10.

As shown in this link :

Rules are:
Six decks
Dealer stands on soft 17
Player may double on any first two cards, including after splitting
Player may split to up to four hands, except aces may only be split once
Player may take early surrender, except against a dealer ace (worth 0.24%)
Continuous shuffler in use. Some casinos will let a small pile (about 52 cards) build up before putting them in the shuffler.

However, on Blackjack Appendix 9 — 6 Decks, Dealer Stands on Soft 17 , shown here ;
hitting a 10-4 against a 10 has a -0.463098 expected return, a little better then -0.5 of surrendering and spliting 8s shows -0.475385, also a little better then the surrendering option. Therefore which option should be the optimal choice?

The appendix assumes late surrender, while the game you're describing has early surrender (albeit restricted to non-ace upcards). Since early surrender allows you to surrender before the dealer knows if he/she has a blackjack (and you'd still lose only half your bet if the dealer does end up with one), there are some additional hands you'd surrender that you wouldn't with the late version.

I also played quite frequently at Grand Lisboa lately. We always surrender at 14, 15 or 16 against house 10. Be there again this 10th July for a week. (2nd Floor)
