Late Breaking News, Compelling Ideas, Just

Plain Good Stuff for the Gaming Industry!

It's time to get over it.

Card counting is yesterday's news.

EliotnewBy Guest Contributor Eliot Jacobson, Ph.D., Jacobson Gaming, LLC and Raving Partner, Table Games Operations and Casino Math Analysis

I have long argued that the fear of card counting costs more than actual card counting. Procedures such as shallow cut-card placement and no-midshoe entry have tangible costs. A dollar figure can be assigned to these and other game protection procedures, and these costs can be directly compared to the potential losses. In the case of card counting, it's not even close.

One executive at a major Strip casino explained the reason that they had shallow cut-card placement and the no-midshoe entry rule: the policy of top management was that they would rather be safe and not worry about card counters at all. The staff on the floor is operating in a climate of fear. One big hit from card counters and they could lose their jobs. This fear costs the casino in wagers lost to procedures that inhibit play.

The long history of card counting makes it hard for casinos to let go of their antiquated paranoia. Fear of card counters is part of the culture of casino management. The book Beat the Dealer by Edward Thorp was published in 1966. Forty-seven years later, it is still in the top ten list of most popular blackjack books on Amazon.com. The rise of team play, spearheaded by Ken Uston in the 1970's, showed a new type of vulnerability. Team play awareness rose with the book and movie about the MIT team's exploits. The recent movie Holy Rollers has kept the focus on blackjack. But advantage players are branching out. They are modernizing. Card counting blackjack is no longer their main target. In many cases, modern players and teams do no blackjack card counting at all.

The new generation of advantage players targets opportunities that fly under the radar, while giving income potential far greater than blackjack card counting. The figurehead of this generation is James Grosjean, whose book Beyond Counting is so well-regarded, it is simply known by advantage players as "The Book." He discusses methods of advantage play that open a new panorama of methods and vulnerabilities. Cut-card placement and no-midshoe entry are procedures that have no effect on a player who is hole-carding a proprietary game, or card counting a side bet on baccarat. These procedures cannot stop a player who is exploiting faulty math. These procedures may actually help a player who is exploiting a shuffle that doesn't properly mix the cards.

The casino's focus on card counters has to be driven from the top down. The General Manager and Director of Table Games both need to understand the relative costs. A solid understanding will lead to procedures that generate more revenue, while helping staff create a more positive atmosphere for players. The focus of game protection can then shift to more significant issues, like hole-carding, edge sorting, marketing mathematics, and protecting proprietary games. It's time to get over it. Card counting is yesterday's news.

If everyone played basic strategy, low limit BJ tables for the most part would disappear.

The mis-directed administrative measures annoy customers and interfere with smooth play routines. Perhaps the casino managers act out ignorance perhaps the ignorance pervades several levels of administration.

Everyone is fighting the most recent war as recounted in the newspapers and altered by endless rumors.

The recent threats don't make the papers and certainly not in sufficient detail to overcome the ever-present card counting threat. So delays and annoyances add up, professional blackjack players probably go elsewhere but so do a great many others who grew tired of the senseless measures that were adopted to frustrate a virtually non-existent threat.
