Just when you think you have won the lottery, you find out you have to split the jackpot with some twenty other people.

http://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/economy/article/2049544/hk73-million-mark-six-jackpot-split-between-235-winning-units

Turns out the numbers were 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 10, with the special number 33.

And conversely:

One ticket has winning numbers in $421 million Powerball lottery

https://www.yahoo.com/news/winning-numbers-drawn-421-million-u-powerball-lottery-043959727.html

"For every $1 worth of Powerball sales, half goes to prizes, 40 percent to state governments for causes such as education, and 10 percent to retailers who sell the tickets and other administrative costs".

That's not fair. The lottery should show past data including how many play the same rocket or limit sales on a ticket number. Sometimes these things happen on smaller odds when credit is illegally given.

The Ohio lottery had a 5/5, which was a $100,000 winner normally, $1,000,000 max shared for numerous winners. One ticket was bought south of Columbus in Bellefontaine, 35 others in Cleveland. A few months later there was a story how one shop was advancing credit in the millions. It didn't mention the above, but it had to be involved. This was probably all near year 2,000, can't remember.

Plus the lottery has been rigged by insiders. Don't bother.

The California Lottery once ran a series of ads on famous people and what numbers they would choose. One of the two main Apple founders said, "1 2 3 4 5 6; they're just as likely to win as any other set."

Personally, I am a believer of "stay away from any feasible combination of parents-and-child ages and birthdays," but 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10 doesn't fall into that group.

"1 2 3 4 5 6; they're just as likely to win as any other set." True.
But it is also true that there are about one hundred other people buying that combination so if and when it ever come out you will probably get less than the average 3rd prize.

as for the 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10 combination, a joke is going around like this:
People just buy all the numbers from 1-10 without 689
(note: 689 is the nickname given to the very unpopular HK chief executive who marginally won the "election" and got 689 votes out of the 1200 voting committee.)

Back when the $1.5 billion jackpot was going on, we talked about ways to avoid duplicating too many others with your numbers. The obvious one was having at least one number above 31. Also picking consecutive numbers, and doubling up your Powerball number with one of your five.

There was a hilarious episode of Martin where Martin won the Lottery of 2.5 million before taxes. He is beyond ecstatic as is normal and he charges a bunch of extravagant things on his credit card assuming that he will just pay for his extravagant things when his lottery check gets cashed(It would be like 1.3 million after his taxes are taken out.)

He and Gina literally roll up into the Lottery office/news station wearing fancy shades and clothes, LOL. They are assuming they are getting about 1.3 million. They get a huge shock when they are told that Martin's winning numbers were part of the biggest tie in history! They immediately are upset(As everyone in their position would be) . Turns out, about 312 people had Martin's winning numbers! Uh oh! A whole bunch of people come rushing in to claim their share.

Martin and Gina are told they are only getting $50 a week before taxes, so more like $30. Gina jumps on the Lottery Representative's back in shocked rage. LOL. Martin later tells Gina that the Representative decided not to press charges as he understood Gina was going to be out of a lot of money(1.3 million versus $30 a week? Ouch.

Martin says even if they return all of the returnable items, they're still in the hole by $1,000. Martin tells Gina something like ,"Don't be sad. We were rich for a week! Hold your head up!" Gina gives him a forced smile and tries to hold her head up as she goes into her room. He does the same thing to her. On the side by side screen, they are both seen crying(Or making cringing expressions). I remember a Youtube poster commenting something like, "The cringing that Martin and Gina are doing is what money withdrawal looks like) I can't imagine the horror of thinking you are going to be up 1.3 million only to be down $1,000! Ouch! This thread about the big Lottery tie reminds me so much of the Martin Lottery episode. ;)

That was probably lifted off of this real story

http://zidbits.com/2010/11/how-did-110-people-win-the-same-lottery/

Also I vaguely remember the daily number coming in 9-11 on the anniversary of 9-11 in ny or nj and it paying less then 100 dollrs

Lady in New Hampshire doesn't want to give up her identity to collect half billion dollar winnings.

If she hadn't already signed the ticket she could have done that.

Yeah since the lottery is state run, you pretty much have no rights, comply, or you will forfeit your winnings.

But, I have a related question for anyone who knows? What are your rights in a Casino? If you hit a VP or Slot Jackpot, can you refuse to do a promo shoot with your winnings? I know casinos hate when you take pictures of your winnings, but casinos seems to love to guilt trip you into letting them take pictures of you to be used in marketing ads and online posts..... By entering the gaming floor do you agree to some sort of contract that all lawful gaming and images of you playing can be used by the casino?

In Nevada if you win while gambling you can refuse any promotional ads unless you agreed to them prior to the gambling. If it is a casino promotion they can stipulate in the written rules if participation is required.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Most casinos have you sign a photo/media release if they want to use your picture or name for advertising. No release, no use.

Not quite the lottery, but (without revealing much info), others and I had a winning progressive ticket at a sportsbook for something like $180k. It was cool till we realized there were like 20 other winners. :(

Food for thought;

Yeah, it's for suckers, but if you must play never play any number below 32. With everyone playing their birthdays and whatnot, maybe you'll be less likely to have to split a jackpot with others.

You can, but that's just for big lotteries, not pick 4s where splits don't hurt. People play bdays, if they win, they split a lot of times. It's up to the player, I think just picking a few above 31 helps reduce the risk of a split. There is no way to really know what others play, could wind up being a strategy just as bad. Say if enough people picked high numbers, they might also split. What I'm thinking about is 6/49, if 6 come above 31, there are not many combinations with only 6/18. The whole thing is about as useless as talking about what you would do with the money if you won, wouldn't worry too much.
