For tables with “Max Payout per Round” limits, how do casinos pay when the full payout amount due to be paid all winners of a given hand exceeds the maximum payout per round?

During my recent Biloxi trip I used MS Stud as an example because casinos offering MS Stud generally post a maximum amount paid in any given round. I used this example: One player has Ace-King suited. Dealer shows 10-J-Q of the same suit, giving that player a royal flush. A second player has the 8-9 of the same suit, for a straight flush. Two other players each have flushes.

Not too long ago, WoV members discussed this issue, not always agreeing with one another. I can't say how they do payouts like this in Las Vegas, but here is what I found when I asked Biloxi casinos:

  • Beau Rivage – The Floor Supervisor I asked said they, “would have to check the 'book'.” But, he wouldn't check for me when I asked my questions.
  • Golden Nugget – The Table Boss passed me to another suit (walking past just then) as THE person to answer my questions. Mr. Expert said the highest winning hand would be paid first, then the 2nd highest winning hand, etc. until max payout was reached. He noted that someone owed $600 for a flush might receive only $200 because that reached the max payout limit, and the next person (perhaps also with a flush) would receive a push on the bet. He agreed this might upset some players. He promised to phone me to confirm what he said, but I never received his call. (No surprise. On numerous occasions GN staff have promised to follow up with either phone call or email, but never have.)
  • Hard Rock – Most crazy payout process. Cards are dealt from dealer's left (1st base, according to Floor) to far right. Normal payout sequence begins at far right, ending at 1st base. Here is the story: Notwithstanding the normal R-to-L payout sequence, when the aggregate is exceeded, bets are paid as follows: 1st base is paid total owed, then work L-to-R paying bets based on who got their cards first (2nd base, 3rd base, etc.) until max payout is reached, with the last person receiving the remaining amount, even if it is less than what s/he should be paid. If other winning players remain, they receive no payout and their bets push. I commented the players who receive the push will justifiably be upset, and he conceded that point. A true trooper, he finally agreed to “check upstairs” to verify what he told me. After almost 10 minutes he explained the person he spoke to told him that the payouts would be proportional. That comment was overheard by someone at a higher pay grade, who interjected that payouts were in “card order,” not proportional. So, what the floor told me was correct. Given how close this came to being overruled, I can't help wonder: On a different shift, with the higher-pay-grade director taking the day off, might the payout have been different?
  • Harrahs – Payout would be proportional.
  • IP – Payout would be proportional.
  • Island View – Payout would be proportional.
  • Scarlet Pearl – Floor said they, “would figure it out if it ever occurred.”

Best answer ever on this question. An honest casino suit! He doesn't know and doesn't want to deal with it now because its not confronting him now. Sounds like a good casino, to me. At least they deal with you in a frank manner.

Just like craps! Those other uncircumcised Philistines at YOUR table, cost you money!
